First, critical thinking is related to the higher thinking process and helps the students act and solve their problems by considering the factors existing around them. The significance of the definition of critical thinking in higher education is that it is about the ability to challenge the students to analyze and critique ideas while also achieving critical values and a sense of creativity. The information obtained for this article is from books and journal articles to get the relevant information and issues. • The result of this article is a finding and discussion related to online learning for promoting students critical thinking. Online learning is increasing in today’s educational environment. The students and educators interact through online instructions. Educators should be critical in choosing the sources (Ricci, 2009). Before the online learning, we knew about traditional learning, which is about face-to-face learning replaced by an online classroom. Classes with an online system give more time for students to be oppressed with limited time to respond. The students can elaborate on their answer and idea compared with traditional classes. Implementing critical thinking in online learning has challenges related to socio-cultural, theoretical, practical, and so on. Critical thinking is a way of thinking with a conceptual or methodological tool for seeing and analyzing the world (Erikson, 2019). The instructor should provide the proper topic to improve the critical thinking of the students. Higher education should design the proper methods and techniques for teaching critical thinking in online activities. Next, critical thinking in Indonesian schools is experiencing difficulties. Based on Subkhan (2012), childhood learning activities are dominated by the teacher. The promotion of students critical thinking provided by subjects such as mathematics Mathematics is related to critical thinking because the students try to solve the problem to find the answer. In English, students faced difficulties because they did not understand the written and spoken forms. After we know about the learning conditions that are the reason for the implementation of critical thinking in Indonesian schools, the writer gives us several strategies to overcome and face the challenges in the promotion of critical thinking through online learning. The instructors should be selected to prepare the method for teaching the learning process through an online classroom. The teachers as instructors hold a crucial role in designing the online learning, keeping the discussions going, and clarifying course topics.

  • Implementing critical thinking in online learning is a complete package for modern education. The critical thinking helps the students face the globalization era. The teacher should design the methods to promote critical thinking in the students and support the learning system. The challenges are faced by many Asian countries, especially Indonesia. Higher education should prepare all of the things to help implement and promote critical thinking for the students.
